Professional Engagement
Professional Standard 7: Engage professionally with colleagues, parents/carers and the community
Focus Area 7.1 - Meet professional ethics and responsibilities
Professional responsibilities are greatly varied from site to site. At my current school, I fulfil my responsibilities in a number of ways. All sites will ask that staff are organised and have lessons planned effectively, as well as participation in development and revision of curriculum and attending various meetings. In addition to these basic requirements, I am also merit selection trained and have participated in panels for teaching and leadership positions; and I have recently been made a proxy fire warden. I am yet to undergo the necessary training for this particular role. I enjoy actively participating in professional development, be it school- or self-organised; and have delivered professional development sessions to my colleagues a number of times over the past couple of years.

Focus Area 7.2 - Comply with legislative, administrative and organisational requirements
There are a number of requirements placed on teachers under these categories. This ePortfolio forms part of my requirement to record evidence of the National Professional Standards in order to progress from Provisional to Proficient registration. We are also required to complete Responding to Abuse and Neglect training every three years. I personally also maintain a current first aid qualification, despite this no longer being a requirement of permanent staff.
Evidence for this standard is the Responding to Abuse and Neglect training certificate.
Focus Area 7.3 - Engage with parents/carers
Our school has parent teacher interview nights once a term. This allows us and parents to request appointments, and have conversations about their child in a non-threatening environment. On an as-needs basis, we also have parent meetings with students at risk. In between, I am in contact with families regarding their child's progress, positive and negative, via phone and email. We also remain in close contact with students' case managers and social workers where applicable.

Focus Area 7.4 - Engage with professional teaching networks and broader communities
I enjoy attending conferences and professional development sessions for a number of reasons. The networking opportunities provided are invaluable, and are usually inaccessible in other forms. Building relationships with teachers from other schools allows opportunities for ongoing conversations and idea and resource sharing, as well as opportunities for students to communicate with other classes. I attend the annual German teachers conferences, and in the past have attended the Modern Language Teachers' Association AGM and EAL/D professional development.
Evidence for this standard is the attendance certificate from the National German Teachers Conference.
